How to choose a powerful outdoor spot?

Lumens, IP, lighting angle, power supply: the 4 criteria that decide whether your spot survives in winter.

How to choose a powerful outdoor spot?

A good outdoor spot is not just an eye-catching one. Four technical criteria determine whether it will really last in time, resist the seasons and deliver the light you need.

1. Lumens, not watts

The wattage indicates the consumption, not the brightness. For the actual brightness, it is the lumen which counts:

  • 10 – 80 lumens: decorative tags, atmosphere
  • 100 – 300 lumens: terminals and aisle appliqués
  • 500 – 1,500 lumens: entrance, garage, parking
  • 2000+ lumens: projectors, large facades, safety

2. The IP index, the only guarantee of waterproofness

The IP is a two-digit code: dust, then water. For external use in France, aim at a minimum IP44. For ground lighting near a gutter or swimming pool, IP65 or more.

Lumihome publishes the exact IP on each product sheet. No marketing round.

3. Solar, 230V or 12V?

Three solutions, three cases of use. The solar is unbeatable for flexibility and zero cost but depends on the sun. The 230V guarantees constant power but requires a connection (and often an electrician). The 12V low voltage is ideal around the swimming pools and for secure self-installation.

4. Manufacturing quality

Failures do not come from LEDs — they come from joints, motion sensor (UV ageing), battery (12 to 24 months on cheap models) and foot (rust). stainless steel or heat-lapped aluminium, with replaceable lithium battery.

How to light up your carport?

How to light up your carport?

The carport n , in the end, is more attractive to the French. And for the sake of this ingenious and practical carport is an excellent alternative to the garage. Economic, it does not require any foundation work or major work. It has all the advantages of a covered parking space, since its open spaces allow to easily exit the vehicle, unlike the garage. But, to make you enjoy all its benefits, the carport must benefit from a suitable outdoor lightingSo how do we light up his carport?

Lighten your carport: the importance of positioning

Even if the carport is an open space that protects vehicles from the weather, once the night falls, it must be able to enjoy good lighting to keep all its practicality. Indeed, whether it is to park, unload your vehicle or to look at the engine, the carport must have suitable lighting, in several places. For a functional and well illuminated car shelter, you must be careful to light up:

  • inside the carport to facilitate your movements;
  • the direct exterior of the carport;
  • the access road to your carport.

Carport internal lighting: specificities

A strategic location

The carport lighting must be aesthetic, but it must be especially practical and functional. To create clever lighting, you would be wrong to place a single ceiling lamp in the centre of the carport. Only the roof of the car would be illuminated, and if you are forced to check the engine or unload your car, this light would not be of great use to you. No, the best way to effectively illuminate inside your carport is to place at least one lamp on the front side, and a second lamp on the rear, on the back, on the carport's interior. opposite side. To illuminate inside your carport, you can choose to outdoor appliques Pyramid Lumihome, explains Christophe Coelho. Designed in stainless steel, they are perfectly resistant to external conditions and can be installed very easily. You can also add additional light sources if you want.

Carport lighting

Adapted solutions

While your carport protects your car, it is important to remember that there is still an open space, subject to wind and humidity. Therefore, you must use lamps suitable for external use. To do this, check the degree of protection of your luminaire. It is an international standard for the sealing of outdoor lamps indicated on each packaging. Composed of IP letters followed by numbers, it indicates the level of protection and resistance of the lamp in question. It is important that your lighting solution be resistant to water projections in case of Finally, know that the Lumihome outdoor solutions are tested to approve their resistance to the worst conditions of moisture and corrosion.

Outdoor carport lighting and access route

Light the exterior of the carport

Lighting the interior of your shelter is important, but it is also important to illuminate the exterior. For example, you can have the appliques on both front poles of the box. Again, these luminaires are placed outside, so you need to make sure that the protection index is well adapted. Discover the range of LED 230V Lumihome, advises Christophe Coelho. Designed to be placed outdoors, they all have highly resistant reflectors that maintain their transparency despite the repeated effects of sunlight. Discover our Pyramid LED appliques for a sober and modern look. For a classic and timeless style, you can also opt for the Castle Lumihome wall applique. To light up the exterior of your carport, you can also choose a solar solution. The Lumihome solar range allows you to enjoy intense lighting, while using the inexhaustible resources of the sun. And for this, there is no need for your carport to be exposed south. Lumihome solutions are equipped with new generation solar sensors, effective even in covered times.

Marking the access route

Finally, remember to think about lighting the access road that leads to your carport. It is often a secondary driveway that you then walk through to reach your home. Therefore, it is important to make a mark on this road. To do this, Lumihome offers you picket spots. Easy to install, they crash in the material to illuminate the roads effectively. And to give height to your markup, you can also either head towards the Pyramid or L terminals. Lumihome's built-in luminaires can also be a solution. Lumihome's built-in spots are also rotable. They withstand a pressure of up to one tonne, a significant criterion when it comes to marking a car access.

If you want to adopt eco-responsible behavior, or if electrical connections have not been planned upstream, you can make your mark using solar luminaires. Discover all the Lumihome solar terminals and spots and enjoy a great ease of installation.

Light up your carport with additional options

To illuminate the outside areas, luminaires equipped with detectors are very interesting. Lumihome offers you ultra-practical solutions equipped with motion detectors or dusk. This is the case for example of our Madrid LED app details Christophe Coelho. Its integrated motion and twilight detector allows for automatic ignition of the application when night falls, and for a more powerful ignition when motion is detected. So you don't have to worry about lighting before leaving your home. Lights turn on automatically as soon as your presence is detected, or as soon as the sunset falls. This saves energy and finds a place always well lit upon your return.

You have all the information you need to shed light on your custom carport. What we must remember is that lighting of this type of shelter must be well thought out and well positioned to be fully effective. Finally, remember that it is an outdoor lighting. Therefore, all luminaires will have to be sufficiently resistant to cope with external conditions and last in time.
