How to choose a powerful outdoor spot?

Lumens, IP, lighting angle, power supply: the 4 criteria that decide whether your spot survives in winter.

How to choose a powerful outdoor spot?

A good outdoor spot is not just an eye-catching one. Four technical criteria determine whether it will really last in time, resist the seasons and deliver the light you need.

1. Lumens, not watts

The wattage indicates the consumption, not the brightness. For the actual brightness, it is the lumen which counts:

  • 10 – 80 lumens: decorative tags, atmosphere
  • 100 – 300 lumens: terminals and aisle appliqués
  • 500 – 1,500 lumens: entrance, garage, parking
  • 2000+ lumens: projectors, large facades, safety

2. The IP index, the only guarantee of waterproofness

The IP is a two-digit code: dust, then water. For external use in France, aim at a minimum IP44. For ground lighting near a gutter or swimming pool, IP65 or more.

Lumihome publishes the exact IP on each product sheet. No marketing round.

3. Solar, 230V or 12V?

Three solutions, three cases of use. The solar is unbeatable for flexibility and zero cost but depends on the sun. The 230V guarantees constant power but requires a connection (and often an electrician). The 12V low voltage is ideal around the swimming pools and for secure self-installation.

4. Manufacturing quality

Failures do not come from LEDs — they come from joints, motion sensor (UV ageing), battery (12 to 24 months on cheap models) and foot (rust). stainless steel or heat-lapped aluminium, with replaceable lithium battery.

In summary

For an outdoor spot that lasts: lumens adapted to your use, IP44 minimum (65 if direct exposure), consistent power supply with your project, and quality materials. Lumihome masteres the 4 criteria on the entire range.

Solar Spots: how to illuminate your garden without using electricity

No need to dig trenches, or make the EDF bill climb to light up your evenings. built-in solar spot allows you to turn a dark garden into a haven of light... without consuming a single kilowatt.

But still it is necessary choose the right models, and especially position them well. You are lit (no word play... or almost) on everything you need to know to succeed in its outdoor solar lighting.

Why do solar spots appeal so much?

The time when the solar spot was synonymous with a weak but weak loupiot is over. Today, the good models offer a real useful light, and sometimes even bluffing.

First, there's theenergy saving : Sunspots are 100% free of charge, clean, and available every day (or almost every day). No need to cable, pull a 230V line, or juggle with electrical standards. We plant, we direct to the sun, and the turn is played.

Then there is the ecological side: no network consumption, no carbon impact linked to use, and materials that are increasingly recyclable. And we don't even talk about the comfort of installation: wireless, without trenches, without stress.

On the design side, we are no longer in the large surface gadget. The current models, like those offered by Lumihome, integrate harmoniously with all styles of exterior design : minimalist, contemporary, discreet or assumed.

Solar has long been seen as an additional solution. Today, technologies have evolved. At Lumihome, we rely on reliable components, with real autonomy and great power. — Christophe Coelho, founder of Lumihome

What a solar spot can really do for you

It all depends on how you use it, of course. But solar spots are far from being limited to a small decorative halo. Here's what you can expect (if you choose the right ones):

  • Building a alley : perfect to avoid trampling your massives or twisting your ankle in the evening. A power of 100 lumens is largely sufficient.

  • Highlight a tree, a massif, a statue : well positioned, a outdoor recessed spot is ideal to highlight an element. Again, no need for a very great power which, on the contrary, would be blinding.

  • Create an atmosphere around a terrace : a warm light for a cosy effect, without blinding the guests.

  • Secure the vicinity of a house or gate : Solar spots with automatic twilight detector allow to light up the night falling without having to worry about lighting them. Perfect for safety.

The criteria for choosing your solar spot

Not all solar spots are equal, and if you've already tested a model that goes off after 45 minutes, you know what we're talking about.

The real criteria to consider are:

  • Lumen power A 100 lumen spot is sufficient for a majority of cases. our 3 solar spots kit. On the other hand, if you have a very large surface to light up, solar is not necessarily what you need. Call us to discuss it.

  • Self-sufficiency : a good solar spot should last at least 6 to 8 hours per night in winter. If the ad is blurred, beware.

  • The solar panel : prefer monocrystalline panels, more efficient. Deported models allow for better light capture, even in winter.

  • Battery: focus on lithium-ion batteries, durable and capable of operating at lower temperatures. Bonuses: at Lumihome, some are replaceable, which greatly prolongs the product's life.

  • L-Privacy Index (IP) : IP65 minimum, for real resistance to rain, water and dust projections.

  • Colour temperature : for a soft atmosphere, aim between 2700K and 3000K. For more functional lighting, 4000K and more.

And if the manufacturer also tells you the performance in winter or low sunshine... you are on a serious product.

Position your spots well: art and light

A good spot is not well placed, it's like a projector lighting up the back of the decor. And believe us, it happens more often than anyone thinks.

Some simple rules :

  • Always steer the sign south, or in the absence of a south-west.

  • Avoid areas too shaded (trees, palissades, walls): a spot in the shade will remain... in the shade.

  • Remember to clean the solar panel regularly: a thin layer of dust or a dead leaf can reduce its efficiency by 30 to 50%.

  • Various heights and angles to create relief: ground-mounted spots for roads, spots to be stinged for shrubs, solar projectors for large volumes.

Tip: Some Lumihome models offer a sun panel with a spot offset, cable connection. Ideal for lighting a shaded corner while placing the panel in the sun.

And in winter, it works?

That's the question we're asked most often, and the answer is: Yes... but not like July.

  • Less sun = less recharge. So less autonomy.

  • The days are shorter, so the spot starts earlier... and emptys its battery faster.

  • A quality model, well positioned, will still hold several hours even in the covered sky.

At Lumihome, we design our solar spots to be efficient all year round. The key: good panel efficiency, optimized battery, and low-power LEDs.

And then let's be honest: even if you earn 4 to 5 hours of light per night in winter... it's already a little solar miracle.

Your garden deserves better than the complete black

Adopting solar spots is making the choice of intelligence: a free, clean, sustainable, and frankly easy to live lightAnd thanks to the technical innovations of recent years, we can now speak of real functional lighting, not just decor.

At Lumihome, each product is designed to last, resist the seasons, and offer you a unique atmosphere. Day and night.

And then between us... if we can shine without consuming, why deprive ourselves of it?
