How to choose a powerful outdoor spot?

Lumens, IP, lighting angle, power supply: the 4 criteria that decide whether your spot survives in winter.

How to choose a powerful outdoor spot?

A good outdoor spot is not just an eye-catching one. Four technical criteria determine whether it will really last in time, resist the seasons and deliver the light you need.

1. Lumens, not watts

The wattage indicates the consumption, not the brightness. For the actual brightness, it is the lumen which counts:

  • 10 – 80 lumens: decorative tags, atmosphere
  • 100 – 300 lumens: terminals and aisle appliqués
  • 500 – 1,500 lumens: entrance, garage, parking
  • 2000+ lumens: projectors, large facades, safety

2. The IP index, the only guarantee of waterproofness

The IP is a two-digit code: dust, then water. For external use in France, aim at a minimum IP44. For ground lighting near a gutter or swimming pool, IP65 or more.

Lumihome publishes the exact IP on each product sheet. No marketing round.

3. Solar, 230V or 12V?

Three solutions, three cases of use. The solar is unbeatable for flexibility and zero cost but depends on the sun. The 230V guarantees constant power but requires a connection (and often an electrician). The 12V low voltage is ideal around the swimming pools and for secure self-installation.

4. Manufacturing quality

Failures do not come from LEDs — they come from joints, motion sensor (UV ageing), battery (12 to 24 months on cheap models) and foot (rust). stainless steel or heat-lapped aluminium, with replaceable lithium battery.

In summary

For an outdoor spot that lasts: lumens adapted to your use, IP44 minimum (65 if direct exposure), consistent power supply with your project, and quality materials. Lumihome masteres the 4 criteria on the entire range.

Make and enlighten a Japanese garden Zen at home

Make and enlighten a Japanese garden Zen at home

It is well known, the land of the rising sun is the undisputed master in the art of zenitude, and this is true even in the garden. Indeed, the Japanese garden was created to come into contact with the gods. For this, this privileged place had to be as sober and as simple as possible. Therefore, the Japanese garden seeks to reproduce nature, however asymmetrical, and thus opposes the straight lines of the gardens to the French.

Set inside or outside, it is a real invitation to calm and relaxation. This short description gives you the urge to transform your exterior into a serene space to relax? Let's find out immediately how to set up a Japanese and Zen garden at home but also how to use the Solar lighting systems to highlight it the night comes.

The Japanese Garden: An Organized Space

It is not because the Japanese garden reproduces and sublimates nature that it is not organised. On the contrary. This little paradise of relaxation is well defined, but not linear for that. So, to design your Japanese garden, whatever its area, start by drawing a plan of this space. Indeed, the rules of Feng Shui apply here and the good circulation of energy is crucial. Don't hesitate to get out of the beaten path: the Japanese garden is conceived as a painting. Avoid angles and perspectives recti Choose the location for the paths and alleys, which should preferably not be straight. Decide on the square of the groves, the pieces of water, the rocks and the various decorative elements you decide to install there. And let's not forget that the Japanese garden must have relief. Therefore, you will need to provide small elevations such as staves or a leveled terrace.

A set of small landscapes

The Japanese garden manages to mix water, rocks, alleys and lanterns to perfection. Often designed around a main path formed by Japanese steps, the Zen garden is often divided into small spaces bounded by small cut hedges, old polished stones or dwarf bamboos. The aim is to avoid accumulating too many elements and giving an impression of silt, you will have to make sure to isolate each component or space them to enhance them and reveal their potential.

And since the Japanese garden is an ode to nature, avoid installing or incorporating too many elements into synthetic matter. Garden furniture is thus to avoid, or to limit in any case. If you still decide to build your Zen garden in a tea room for example, prefer natural materials such as wood or rattan.

Finally, the water is essential. Depending on the space available, it can be a pond, a water basin populated by Koïs carp, a fountain or a waterfall. Water, its sounds and clapotis will animate your outdoor Zen garden and will bring you a feeling of well-being.

Plant selection

To create a Japanese garden and Zen at home, know that you won't be able to choose any plant, but you will have to prefer the persistent plants, able to flourish in shade, to compose your background decor. Japanese maple, oak, cherry or pine are perfectly suited.

To build the ground and dress the banks of your aquatic space, you will need to install gravel or moss. You can add ground covering plants such as ferns, bamboo, grasses, or slow-growing shrubs. For aquatic plants, choose lotus, reeds or lily trees.

Finally, if you decide to plant flowers, avoid the bright colors and instead focus on cold colors. Pink azaleas and rhododendrons, magnolias, iris, hostas are particularly suitable. Anyway, we recommend planting your flowers in a single color tablecloth, always in order to promote harmony in the garden.

A tip: stay sober and limit the number of different species. Finally, since the odd number is considered a good augury in the Japanese crop, know that all your plants will have to be planted by 3, 5 or 7.

The choice of lighting

To enjoy the harmony that emerges from your Zen space even at night, quality lighting is required. Again, not all solutions are suitable for this type of garden. Indeed, organization and sobriety must be the driving threads of the creation of your Japanese garden. Therefore, you will have to choose sober and aesthetic outdoor luminaires, which will be able to blend gently with this oasis of relaxation. "For a Japanese garden, the Venus solar terminal offers a completely clean style that fits perfectly", precise Catherine Rochetaux

Discreet and focused lighting

To light up precisely certain parts of your garden, such as the massifs or shrubs, you will need to use discreet and directional lighting. The picket spots are then perfect to create a night stage by lighting only some parts of your plants. Lumihome offers outdoor LED picket spots that easily settle in, and highlight very specific elements of your garden. Lumihome picket LED spots are designed to offer a reduced lighting angle to highlight very precise elements. And to stay in solar version, Lumihome has just launched its new solar projector with contemporary design and exceptional performance... advises Christophe Coelho

It's good, that's what the Japanese garden needs!

You can also use small, small, posts, like the Pyramids' 40 cm terminals in the Lumihome range. Reduced and discreet, they will incorporate into the decor of your Zen space, and bring an ideal touch of light. Robust and timeless, the Pyramide terminal provides subtle and powerful white light, perfect for lighting a precise area.

Simple and efficient lighting

If you have decided to install in your Japanese garden an alley, a wooden element like steps, a terrace or a bridge, you can opt for 230V recessed spots. Ultra powerful, they diffuse effective luminous fluxes, while avoiding glare. Designed especially for outdoor use, they are able to offer custom lighting to your Japanese garden. The Lumihome range of recessable spots comes in three different sizes. This makes it possible to choose the power Finally, if you have integrated all the elements necessary for the natural and zenitude to reign unconditionally in your garden, the water floor will be present. Again, Lumihome has thought of everything and offers you 12V built-in LED spots so that safety standards are no longer a problem. Minimalists and aesthetics, they enjoy a timeless design, ideal for sprinkled it and there touches of light, while mixing in the soothing decor.

A Japanese and Zen garden that takes place anywhere

In Japan, the smallest area is used to create a Zen garden. This miniature relaxation space takes place even on the narrowest terraces, the smallest balconies, and even inside. On the edge of a window or along a corridor, this small paradise of zenitude can even be placed on a furniture. A terrarium decorated with a layer of soil, white sand or white gravel, bonsai and accessories... and the tower is played. The F Shui is so easy to invite home thanks to the miniature Zen garden inside.

Here are all the elements that will allow you to create a Japanese and Zen garden at home. Remember that whatever your choice of plants and decorative elements, the Japanese Zen garden wants to be ordered, soothing and especially in perfect osmosis with nature. By applying these tips and by showing imagination, you will manage to create, it is certain, a real oasis of relaxation, even in the midst of daily vascorm!
