How to choose a powerful outdoor spot?

A good outdoor spot is not just an eye-catching one. Four technical criteria determine whether it will really last in time, resist the seasons and deliver the light you need.

1. Lumens, not watts

The wattage indicates the consumption, not the brightness. For the actual brightness, it is the lumen which counts:

  • 10 – 80 lumens: decorative tags, atmosphere
  • 100 – 300 lumens: terminals and aisle appliqués
  • 500 – 1,500 lumens: entrance, garage, parking
  • 2000+ lumens: projectors, large facades, safety

2. The IP index, the only guarantee of waterproofness

The IP is a two-digit code: dust, then water. For external use in France, aim at a minimum IP44. For ground lighting near a gutter or swimming pool, IP65 or more.

Lumihome publishes the exact IP on each product sheet. No marketing round.

3. Solar, 230V or 12V?

Three solutions, three cases of use. The solar is unbeatable for flexibility and zero cost but depends on the sun. The 230V guarantees constant power but requires a connection (and often an electrician). The 12V low voltage is ideal around the swimming pools and for secure self-installation.

4. Manufacturing quality

Failures do not come from LEDs — they come from joints, motion sensor (UV ageing), battery (12 to 24 months on cheap models) and foot (rust). stainless steel or heat-lapped aluminium, with replaceable lithium battery.

Renovating exterior lighting: 7 tips to upgrade your installation

Your outdoor lighting is starting to look grey? It consumes too much, lacks elegance or dates from another era? Perhaps it's time to offer it a little bit of a young shot! Modernizing its installation can make a real difference, both in terms of performance and aesthetics. But, how to rethink your exterior lighting ? Here are 7 tips for reviewing and renovating outdoor lighting.

1 - State your current lighting situation

Before doing anything, an inventory is required. Recessed spots, appliqués, outdoor streetlights, beacons... All your outdoor lights must be inspected. The objective is to check their physical condition to determine if they are to be changed. Are they damaged? Roulés? Simply out of date?

Then, go to energy performance your outdoor lamps, because even if they are still in good condition, they may be very energy-consuming. Incandescent or halogen bulbs, for example, consume a lot of energy explains Christophe Coelho, founder of Lumihome. It's also because they're not found in the market anymore. You still have them? Plan to change them.

Identify areas where lighting is too intense, or insufficient. Finally, ask yourself what is the main objective of this renovation Are you looking to reduce energy consumption, improve the aesthetics of your outdoors or integrate modern features such as connectivity?

2 - Renovate outdoor lighting with LED solutions

Want to move to the next level? Opt for LEDs If it is not already done! Not only do they bring a lighting of exceptional qualityBut, in addition, they consume much less energy than conventional lighting solutions. Ultra robust, they last years! This limits replacements... for new savings to the key! Finally, LEDs are mostly compatible with the latest technologies. So if you want to go far in the renovation of your system, opting for lighting with motion detectors for example or for a connected system, you can!

3 - Building on ecological solutions

If you are sensitive to environmental issues, rethinking your outdoor lighting is a great opportunity to act. So, how to do it reducing its ecological footprint ? Simply adopt environmentally friendly and sustainable solutions.

First, eliminate the Incandescent or halogen bulbs, for example, very energy-intensive. Replace them with LED bulbs, Recyclable after end of life and which do not contain mercury or other hazardous materials in their composition.

Another interesting option: Solar lightingThese luminaires work thanks to the sun's rays, storing energy to light up your garden or terrace at nightfall. Moreover, contrary to the ideas received, recent models are very efficient, even in cloudy weather. Lumihome offers a range of solar solutions capable of competing with traditional lighting, while being totally autonomous.

Even better, why not combining the two technologies ? advises Christophe Coelho. By combining LEDs with solar panels, you can create both economical and ecological outdoor lighting, without ever sacrificing quality.

4 - Renovate exterior lighting with connected lighting

Imagine being able to turn on, off or adjust your lighting from your smartphone or remote control, without moving from your sofa. That's exactly what it offers connected lightingThese modern solutions are incredibly practical and offer a multitude of features: intensity variation, color change or schedule programming. Connected lighting is not just making your daily life more comfortable: it can also make it more comfortable. strengthen your home's security. For example, simulating your presence while on vacation, you deter intrusions. Moreover, contrary to the accepted ideas, install exterior lighting with remote control It's not that complicated.

Just as convenient as the connected lamp, the luminaire with motion sensor secures your exterior. Intelligent, it is also economical since it only lights up when necessary. There is no need to look for your lock or switch in the dark. The detector captures your presence and your lighting lights automatically.

6 - Renovate exterior lighting with modern and aesthetic lighting solutions

Your garden lighting is a little old-fashioned? It is no longer to the taste of the day and no longer matches with the style of your home that has changed over time? In short, it deserves a makeover. To modernize your installation, simply replace the oldest lighting by more contemporary models. Choose luminaires with clean lines, made of aluminium or steel, such as our LED Explorer terminals. You can also play with shapes and styles to customize your space: embedded spots for a minimalist look or wall panels for a warm atmosphere.

It must be in accordance with the style of your home, but also with the external elements already present (furniture, other luminaires, etc.).

To renovate and modernize your outdoor lighting, avoid excessive lighting. Have you abused the solutions? Have you multiplied the light points to the point of turning your garden into an airstrip? You wanted to do well. But the best is the enemy of the good, especially in terms of exterior lighting adds Christophe Coelho. Good lighting is a sufficient, effective, non-excessive, and non-aggressive lighting for the eyes, for wildlife and your neighbours. Embed your exterior lighting with elegance !”

Finally, each space deserves a adapted lightingA terrace will enjoy a soft, sieved light, while an entrance will need more powerful lighting to be functional. So stop for mapping your outdoor spacesIdentify areas to be illuminated, angles to be highlighted and places where you can save light. This will help you avoid excesses and create harmonious lighting.

The renovation of outdoor lighting is a great opportunity to rethink spaces. Whether it's a simple update or a total jamming of your outdoor lighting, you can create a space that reflects your tastes while being practical and environmentally friendly.
