IP44 vs IP65 vs IP67 explained

IP44 vs IP65 vs IP67 explained

The IP code (Ingress Protection) tells you exactly how weatherproof a fixture is. Two digits: first for dust, second for water. Numbers go up, protection goes up.

The numbers, decoded

  • IP44: protected from solid objects over 1 mm and water spray from any direction. Use: covered porches, sheltered areas only.
  • IP54: limited dust + spray. Use: wall lights under eaves.
  • IP65: dust-tight + water jets. Use: the workhorse rating for garden, terrace, façade.
  • IP67: dust-tight + 30-min immersion at 1 m. Use: pool surrounds, ground-recessed fixtures.
  • IP68: dust-tight + continuous immersion. Use: in-pool or fountain fixtures.

The rule of thumb

If you can drive a power-washer at it, the fixture should be IP65 or higher. If it can sit in standing water, IP67. Anything below IP44 is indoor-only.

All Lumihome outdoor fixtures are rated IP65 minimum. Our pool-zone 12V spotlights are IP67.
